Where required, Smart Reno validates that its contractors are licensed to work in their designated provinces, however, additional licensing or coverage may be required for your specific municipality. What credentials should your contractor have?
The contractor that you hire to help with your home renovation or construction project should be qualified to do the work, so it’s important to choose a contractor that has the necessary licenses, insurance, and experience in the area of work you require.
Here are the five most important factors to look for when choosing a home renovation contractor:
Insurance
Ask your contractor about their insurance. Smart Reno receives proof of liability insurance from contractors who are members of Smart Reno when they join our network and when they renew their membership with us. You should also confirm that the insurance policy remains valid and covers the scope and size of your project before work begins and throughout the duration of your project.
Licensing
Verify your selected contractor’s licences match the type of work that they will be doing for you. Licensing requirements vary by jurisdiction and the work being performed. Just because your contractor is qualified to do structural work does not mean that they are licensed for other trades, like electrical or plumbing work. Confirm that everyone working on your renovation (including sub-contractors) has the right licence and that it is valid.
Permits
Ensure that your contractor has obtained the necessary permits for your project. It’s also a good idea to confirm if there are additional permit requirements specific to your municipality, as doing work without proper permits can expose you to significant risks.
Reviews
The next best thing after word-of-mouth is an online review. Check what others say about the contractor. If you cannot find reviews online, ask the contractor for references from past clients who undertook renovations similar to yours.

Look for photos of projects that the contractor has worked on to see if they meet your expectations. Has the contractor completed projects like yours in the past? Read through comments from other professionals as well as past clients across different platforms.
